Social networking is a great way to keep up with friends, connect with new people and even to just stay in the loop. But now, social networking is finding a place in the nonprofit world. LinkedIn recently released a new feature allowing users to add sections to their profile. One of the sections is titled “volunteer experience and causes.” Keep reading to find out why you should not only add to the section, but also check out your friends’ sections.
Find New Organizations
LinkedIn is already unique in that it allows you to connect with your coworkers and other friends in a professional setting. With the new option for sections, you are able to see some of the places where those closest to you are volunteering. Chances are that you’ll find organizations that you didn’t know existed with some really awesome missions. The new links will allow you to explore new opportunities and hopefully find an organization that you can be passionate about.
Tell Others Why Your Organization Rocks
Do you volunteer at an organization you know outshines the rest? By boasting about it on the volunteer experience and causes section of your LinkedIn profile, you are letting your connections know that you really care for the organization. People who view your profile might know where you work, but they might not know anything about the work that you do at a nonprofit organization. This feature gives you the chance to educate others about some great volunteer opportunities.
Find Volunteers Like You
Maybe your coworkers know that in the office, you’re the funny guy who makes people smile. But what they don’t know is that you use your humor to volunteer working with children. Whatever the case, posting on your profile is a discreet way to tell others about what causes you’re interested in outside of the office. There are probably people in your office that will be surprised at where you volunteer. Even more surprising, they might even be interested in the same cause. If you can find those people who relate to the organization’s mission, you’ll end up helping out your favorite nonprofits in the long run.
