THE TREVOR PROJECT  - 866-488-7386 - Is an American nonprofit organization that focuses on suicide prevention among gay, lesbian, transgender, questioning and queer youth. They offer crisis support via phone, text and chat, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, that is free, confidential, and secure. In addition to their crisis support services, they offer peer support, public education, research, and advocacy on their site.

TRANS LIFELINE - 877-565-8860 - Is a free and confidential phone service run by trans people for trans and questioning peers. Callers are welcome who need someone trans to talk to, even if you're not in crisis and are unsure if you are trans.

PRIDE FOR YOUTH - A Long Island Crisis Center service for LGBT+ young people through age 30 with a mission to enhance the health, wellness, and cultural competency of young people through education, support services, and youth development. 

GLSEN - A national network of educators, students, and local chapters working to ensure that every students has a safe, supportive and LGBTQ-inclusive K-12 education. 

IT GETS BETTER - A nonprofit with a mission to uplift, empower, and connect LGBT+ youth around the globe.

PFLAG Long Island - Part of a national organization of parents, families, friends, and allies united with the LGBT+ community to move equality forward.

TRCLI (Transgender Resource Center Long Island) - Offers free support groups, including one for all members of the transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary community that is also open to families, partners, and allies.

PRIDE FOR PARENTS - a free, virtual support group held by PFY for parents and adult family members of the LGBTQ community. Pride for Parents meets over zoom on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 6:30pm-8:30pm to connect, support one another, and receive needed education. CLINICAL RESOURCES

HEART AND SOUL CENTER - A clinic that is located in Suffolk County that has been helping clients in the LGBTQ+ community for over 20 years. Their staff members are members of the WPATH (World Professional Association of Transgender Health).

THE FAMILY ACCEPTANCE PROJECT - Based out of the University of California at San Francisco, The Family Acceptance Project® is a research, intervention, education and policy initiative to prevent health and mental health risks and to promote well-being for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer-identified children and youth, including suicide, homelessness, drug use and HIV — in the context of their families, cultures and faith communities. The site links to a number of free resources and peer-reviewed articles.

THE SOGIE CENTER - Based out of the University of Maryland at Baltimore, The National Center for Youth with Diverse Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, & Expression (The National SOGIE Center), provides a centralized site for accessing resources on providing culturally responsive care to children, youth, young adults with diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) and their families across systems, including child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health (including school mental health), substance use systems, and housing and homelessness. The Center also provides training, technical assistance, and implementation support on creating culturally responsive systems for children, youth, and families with diverse SOGIE. 

AFFIRM CAREGIVER - AFFIRM Caregiver is an evidence informed, seven session, manualized intervention to enhance affirmative parenting practices that promote the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth. The AFFIRM Caregiver model emerged from Youth AFFIRM, an evidence based affirmative Cognitive Behavior Therapy intervention which has been scientifically shown to reduce psychosocial distress and improve coping skills among LGBTQ+ youth.

 

PRESENTATION RESOURCES

NYSED - Provides guidance to all schools that recommends that nonbinary and transgender students should be addressed by their chosen pronouns, and also be allowed to access public restrooms. 

Dignity for all Students Act - The DASA  is a NYS law that seeks to provide all students with a safe, supportive environment at school and ensures that there is a liaison at each school who will report harassment and also address it.

Title IX - Title IX is a Federal Law that states that schools must provide equal access to all school facilities and programs consistent with a student's gender identity.

WPATH - The World Professional Association for Transgender Health promotes the highest standards of health care for individuals through the articulation of Standards of Care (SOC) for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People.

Family Acceptance Project - Our findings are used in a wide variety of ways to help families, providers, clergy, youth and policymakers to decrease risk and promote well-being for LGBTQ children and youth and to strengthen families.

TSER - Trans Student Educational Resources is a youth-led organization dedicated to transforming the educational environment for trans and gender non-conforming students through advocacy and empowerment. Founded in 2011, it is the only national organization led by trans youth.
